God is absolutely sovereign. To understand the depth of that statement, consider these mind-boggling truths…
-
Nothing happens that God does not know. God knows everything! He is literally a Know-It-All!
-
God created all things, and holds all things together (Colossians 1:16)
-
God is omnipresent. He is at all places at all times.
-
God is omnipotent. He is all-powerful. Nothing is too difficult for Him. He can do anything He wants! (Jeremiah 32:17)
-
God needs nothing. He is self-sufficient. He never needs help! (Acts 17:25)
-
Nothing occurs without God’s permission. Nothing ever surprises God. He is never shocked. He knows past, present and future. (Psalm 139:2-4)
-
He has the authority to do whatever He wants. God does not have to ask for permission for anything. He is answerable to no one.
-
And ultimately, the will of God will be done. And what’s amazing about that statement is that God also gives humans free will. So, as one Bible handbook explained, “What makes God’s sovereignty effective is that his will is ultimately done—sometimes along with, sometimes in spite of, our free choices.”
The sovereignty of God refers to the reality of who He is. As Kay Warren and Tom Holladay said, “God is not someone with a dominating personality; he is a person who is absolutely dominant. God is not controlling; he is in ultimate control. God does not need to take charge because he always is in charge.”
Perhaps the best way to define the sovereignty of God is to simply say, “God is in control…of everything. And He has the right and authority to rule everything.” But unlike corrupt earthly rulers who rule out of fear or selfish ambition, God rules in love. He is the loving Sovereign King who loves you and wants what is best for you!
