“Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” ––John 4:10
Our hearts are thirsty for the glory of Christ, and we don’t even know it. We are in a constant search for glory to fill our hearts. It’s why we will drive hundreds of miles to get to the Grand Canyon, just to stand there in silence with our jaws dropped. It’s why we sit on the beach and watch the waves crash on the shore. It’s because our hearts desperately want to be captivated by glory.
This new year, we fill our notebooks with new resolutions hoping to find satisfaction. We look for it in a healthier marriage, a new friendship, a new exercise app, or in the success of our children. Yet, none of these things can satisfy our deepest cravings, but will always leave us wanting. Only the glory of God in Jesus Christ can give us what we are search for––if we only knew that’s what our hearts actually wanted.
If we knew that what our heart actually wants is the gift of God found in the grace of Jesus Christ, we would have asked Jesus for it. And he would have given us living water.
The one who knows everything you have ever done loves you. You are not too messy for Jesus this new year. He offers you himself. Come and drink from the Living Water without price and be satisfied.
“Lord, thank you for loving me even when I don’t deserve it. Help my heart to find its satisfaction in you alone in 2022. In Jesus name, amen.”
