Sometimes it is hard to know what to believe. Our world and our nation are so divided with each side of the political spectrum spinning their own version of the truth. We have already begun seeing commercials about this November’s elections and the candidates running for office. Now even weather reporting has now been called into question. Check out this video from the Weather Channel as they were reporting on Hurricane Florence.
As you can see the weatherman is having great difficulty bracing himself against the wind while two people casually stroll by in the background. In our culture today everything is made to be a crisis. “This is going to be the worst storm ever!” “This is the most important election of our lifetime!” We hear these types of exaggerated claims on an almost daily basis. So, how do we know if they are true? Truth, it seems, can be a very hard thing to actually pin down. This is certainly not a new phenomenon!
When Jesus was betrayed and arrested, he was questioned about his true identity. “If I tell you, you will not believe…” These are the words Jesus spoke to the council in Luke 22. I find it so interesting that in our own era of “fake news” these words of Jesus have never seemed truer. I have become so skeptical of everything I see on the news or read in the paper (ok I don’t actually read the paper anymore – I read it online).
What is truth? This is the question that Pilate asked of Jesus. This question came in response to Jesus’ explaining that he had come into the world “to bear witness to the truth.” And Jesus further explained, “Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” John 18:37
Pilate was close to the right question when he asked, “What is truth?” But the right question is actually – who is truth? As followers of Christ we know the truth. Truth is a Person! Jesus claimed to be the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)! In this world of uncertainty we know beyond any doubt that we can trust in Jesus as the living word of God and that we can trust the written word of God – the scriptures. Beyond these two things, everything it seems is open to interpretation. As you try to navigate these trying times looking for truth, remember it can only be found in Jesus and the Bible!
Do not fall into despair over “fake news.” Instead focus on the only real truth that matters – Jesus Christ is the living Son of God! He is the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings! And I trust he is your Savior. In John 8:32 Jesus says that the truth will set us free. Live victoriously in Jesus Christ because truth and freedom can be found in him alone! Spend time with him today. Worship him today. Spend time in his word today then you will truly know the Truth!
